Joe served for 34 years in the U.S. Army, both overseas and in the US, with 13 years on the faculty of the United States Military Academy. He was the Deputy Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and the Director of the Academy’s Graduate Program, the Eisenhower Fellowship. Additionally, he served as a special project officer for the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army on an Army Cultural Transformation Initiative. Since retirement, Joe served as a Professor of the Practice of Management at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He taught leadership in the MBA, executive MBA, and the Advanced Management programs. Joe was also a Visiting Professor at Sanford School of Public Policy. He served as a scholar in the Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics, and was the faculty advisor to the Coach K Fellows Program. He retired in 2017 as a Professor Emeritus, Duke University. Currently, Joe is the Chief Learning Officer, the Bee Downtown Leadership Institute, Durham, NC, serves as an executive coach in 3 different programs, and has served on several non-profit boards, include service as a trustee with the McGowan Foundation, Chicago, IL.
