Thayer Leadership Inventory™

Our proprietary, validated assessment evaluates leadership capabilities across six core dimensions, aligning leadership and management behaviors to guide individuals, teams, and organizations toward success while ensuring results are achieved with integrity.

It was developed and validated by Thayer faculty member Colonel (Ret.) Sean Hannah, Ph.D. and Dr. John Sumanth., and is the only assessment that is:

  • Based on military leadership principles and experiences that transfer to corporate environment
  • Integrated into a holistic academic and experiential values-based leader development program
  • Designed to include an individual development plan and one-on-one coaching versus stand-alone tools

The 360-degree, 270-degree, and self-assessment options of the assessment provide robust performance feedback from superiors, peers, direct reports, and individuals. That, along, with a leader development plan workbook and guided coaching helps leaders improve their leadership across the six dimensions and drive personal and organizational growth by:

  • Encouraging self-awareness and personal development
  • Empowering leaders to measure how things get done versus what gets done
  • Promoting interpersonal dialogue, working relationships, and overall performance

One Person at a Time

To deepen individual development, our coaching services connect you directly with seasoned faculty – accomplished leaders with diverse, real-world experience – who offer expert guidance and proven strategies to help navigate challenges and drive lasting success. Through candid insight and structured support, they identify strengths and growth areas, establish clear, attainable goals, and ensure accountability and progress for you as a leader.

Coaching begins by establishing a strong relationship to foster greater self-awareness. Our coaches create an environment of trust, encouraging vulnerability, and setting the stage for open, honest conversations through active listening.

Action Plan Coaching

This personalized coaching experience builds on a participant’s Thayer program by transforming insights—gathered through their training and TLI Self or 360° assessments—into confidential, actionable development goals. Working closely with a coach, participants review growth opportunities and key program materials, such as their Leadership Philosophy, to co-create a tailored Action Plan. Typically delivered in one or two sessions, this coaching engagement often begins with a virtual meeting to establish rapport and maximize impact.

1:1 Coaching

This coaching engagement, initiated by either the individual or a key stakeholder, typically extends across three or more sessions, scheduled biweekly or monthly. While independent of any specific program, it can build on Action-Plan Coaching as a natural extension of the development journey. Some clients choose to continue these engagements for years.

  • Initial session focuses on debriefing assessments, setting goals and expectations, building rapport, and understanding the participant’s background.
  • Subsequent sessions remain flexible and personalized, addressing evolving goals and real-time leadership challenges.
