Joe served for 34 years in the U.S. Army, both overseas and in the US, with 13 years on the faculty of the United States Military Academy. He was the Deputy Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and the Director of the Academy’s Graduate Program, the Eisenhower Fellowship. Additionally, he served as a special project officer for the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army on an Army Cultural Transformation Initiative. Since retirement, Joe served as a Professor of the Practice of Management at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He taught leadership in the MBA, executive MBA, and the Advanced Management programs. Joe was also a Visiting Professor at Sanford School of Public Policy. He served as a scholar in the Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics and as a faculty advisor to the Coach K Fellows Program. He retired in 2017 as a Professor Emeritus, Duke University. He has performed leadership education and consulting work with the US Army, US Army Special Operations, the US Air Force, the CIA, and a number of Fortune 500 organizations. Currently, Joe is the Chief Learning Officer, Bee Downtown Leadership Institute, Durham, NC, and serves as an executive coach for multiple organizations.
