Experience

Joe served for 34 years in the U.S. Army, both overseas and in the US, with 13 years on the faculty of the United States Military Academy. He was the Deputy Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and the Director of the Academys Graduate Program, the Eisenhower Fellowship. Additionally, he served as a special project officer for the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army on an Army Cultural Transformation Initiative. Since retirement, Joe served as a Professor of the Practice of Management at Duke Universitys Fuqua School of Business. He taught leadership in the MBA, executive MBA, and the Advanced Management programs. Joe was also a Visiting Professor at Sanford School of Public Policy. He served as a scholar in the Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics and as a faculty advisor to the Coach K Fellows Program. He retired in 2017 as a Professor Emeritus, Duke University. He has performed leadership education and consulting work with the US Army, US Army Special Operations, the US Air Force, the CIA, and a number of Fortune 500 organizations. Currently, Joe is the Chief Learning Officer, Bee Downtown Leadership Institute, Durham, NC, and serves as an executive coach for multiple organizations.

Publications/Awards
  • Joe has been a contributing author on a number of books and other publications for the United States Military Academy and the U.S. Army. He has written a number of articles and book chapters on leadership and leader development, to include 2 chapters for the Harvard Business School Press and Sage Publications. He has been acknowledged with the Excellence in Teaching Award at Fuqua, received a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point, a Distinguished Contribution Award from the Army Athletic Association at West Point and elected to the Leadership Triangle Hall of Fame of North Carolina.
